Need a job? Annual spring job fair takes place today at White Oaks Mall | CBC News

A career fair in south London is expected to draw roughly 50 employers and about 2,000 prospective employees together on Tuesday.

The London Economic Development Corporation’s (LEDC) annual spring job fair will take place between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at White Oaks Mall.

“We have a lot of different industries represented and many of the organizations coming are hiring for a lot of positions,” said Christine Wilton, LEDC’s director of workforce development, who called the fair one of the largest in the region.

So far, roughly 2,000 people have registered as job seekers who plan to attend, but registration is optional and walk-ins are welcome, Wilton said.

“We’re seeing more and more registrations and interest all the time,” she said. “We’re happy to help people prepare, even on site, and we have employment agencies there to assist job seekers as well.”

Employers registered for the fair include the London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Voyago and the London Transit Commission, Wilton said, adding there are close to 1,000 positions to be filled by employers.

Wilton also said in-person job fairs provide networking opportunities.

“When I speak with employers, what I hear is they’re more likely to hire people if they have a connection. What I hear from job seekers is that they don’t necessarily always feel comfortable making those connections,” she said. “This really gives people the chance to connect in person and and learn about the employer.”

For people looking to attend, Wilton said the fair is usually busiest between 2 and 4 p.m.

“In my mind, nothing beats the opportunity to make a great first impression.”
