New records set at London’s Heathrow and Stansted airports

More than 7.4 million people travelled through London’s Heathrow airport last month, with the 268,000 passengers passing through it on 30 June marking its busiest ever day.

June also saw more than 260,000 passengers travel through the airport on consecutive days for the first time in the airport’s history.

Heathrow authorities said more than 90,000 people are now working at the airport – more than ever before – including ‘specialist teams tasked with supporting a smooth, successful summer’.

“June has seen more Heathrow records shattered including serving more passengers in a single day than ever before. I want to thank all my colleagues who went the extra mile to make sure the 268,000 passengers travelling on the busiest day had a smooth, stress free journey,” said Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye.

Overall passenger numbers were up 5.6 per cent year on year for the month of June and increased by 9.9 per cent for the first half of the year at 39.8 million. Air transport movements in June numbered 39,843, up 4.5 per cent on June 2023.

Meanwhile, London Stansted airport recorded its busiest ever June, welcoming 2.8 million passengers – an increase of 8.3 per cent on June 2023 and 153,000 more passengers than its previous best June in 2019.

The performance also saw the airport exceed 29 million passengers in a 12-month period for the first time.

In addition, Stansted also saw more than 100,000 passengers pass through the airport in a single day in June for the first time (28 June), becoming the airport’s third busiest ever day.

Nick Millar, the airport’s operations director, said: “To pass the 29 million passengers a year milestone for the first time in London Stansted’s history is a fantastic achievement, and testament to the extensive route network we offer, plus the reliability and efficiency of the airport’s terminal and airfield operation.”
