This South London street will soon be pedestrianised

This Tooting street will soon be car-free and full of delicious food (Provider: Wandsworth Council)

Londoners, rejoice, for a new street food market will be making its way onto the map.

Plans have been revealed for a brand new open air market on Totterdown Street in Tooting.

Stretching from Saint Cyprian’s Road to Blakenham Road, the newly pedestrianised stretch of road will include food and drink stalls, as well as a seating area for visitors.

Although the neighbourhood is already home to a rich street food market scene, including Tooting Market and Broadway Market, the idea for this particular market came from discussions with local businesses on how to improve Totterdown Street.

There will be a one-way system across Totterdown Street, Saint Cyprian’s Street and Kellino Street to allow the market to operate.

Wandsworth Council hope that the new Totterdown Street market will help to revitalise the area. However, the market will be a trial. The council will try out the pedestrianised zone and market over the course of a year and its future depends on the results of a public consultation.

Jenny Yates, Wandsworth’s cabinet member for transport, said that the trial market ‘will make this part of Tooting a more prominent local landmark and leisure destination’.

Kemi Akinola, another council cabinet member said: ‘The views of local people will be pivotal in helping us reach that final decision, so I would urge them to take part in our online consultation which will be open for comments throughout the year’.

Though Londoners are spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor markets – from vintage wares at Portobello Market to flowers Columbia Road Flower Market – that doesn’t make it any less exciting that there will be a new one to add to the books.
