Shoppers have been evacuated from an area at a major UK shopping centre after a suspicious package was found in a bin.

Emergency services rushed to the scene outside The Galleries in Bristol city centre, where a huge cordon is now in place. Officers from Avon and Somerset Police are now in attendance.

One eyewitness told BristolLive: “Something has happened outside Jack Wills by the galleries.. do you know what it is please? There are lots of police cars and an area taped off.”

Police officers confirmed they were called to Cabot Circus following reports a suspicious package being found in a bin at the shopping centre. A cordon is in place around the bin as a precaution, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said.

One person has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and further enquiries are being made. The cordon is in place outside of the H Samuel jewellery shop.

Dramatic pictures show a heavy police presence at the scene.

The cordon stretches outside The Galleries shopping centre, in front of Game, Jack Wills and Belong. Meanwhile in another photo, one police officer could be seen shining a torch into the bin under investigation.
