A woman has died after fire broke out at an apartment block in London.

Around 30 firefighters were called to the blaze in Pimlico, Westminster, yesterday evening, with people told to avoid the area.

Photos from the scene showed soot marks above an open window at the red brick mansion block, with other windows covered by a blue tarpaulin where flames were particularly intense.

Police said they were called at 5.20pm to a residential building in Page Street.

They said: ‘Officers responded with London Ambulance Service paramedics and the London Fire Brigade.

‘One woman – no further details – was found deceased.

‘Police are working to confirm her identity and inform next of kin.
