KALPANA made a mockery of her opening mark when scoring over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago, impressed with how quickly she settled matters a couple of furlongs out and looking well worth her place at a higher level. She stormed ten lengths clear and the form she showed looks the best on offer so, with more to come, she appeals as the one to beat.

RUNNING LION was an impressive winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes on this card last season, readily quickening clear to score by four and a half lengths. She was withdrawn at the start in the Oaks and then failed to beat a rival in the French Oaks but got back on track to some extent with creditable placed efforts in a listed race at Salisbury and a Group 3 here. She shaped better than the result would suggest when down the field in the Fillies And Mares Stakes at Ascot on her final start of the campaign, looking like she found the test of stamina too much, and she should be suited by dropping back in trip here on her return.

NEW LONDON failed to win last season, though he did show smart form on a couple of occasions and finished placed in a couple of listed contests. He was below his best a couple of times at Meydan over the winter but he’s been given a break and dropped back into handicap company for the first time since winning on the July course in 2022, so it would be little surprise were he to bounce back.

FALLEN ANGEL showed run-by-run improvement as a juvenile and stepped up to Group 1 company in her stride when winning the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on her final start of the campaign. Fallen Angel travelled smoothly, was produced to lead inside the final couple of furlongs and then impressed with how she quickened again when the runner-up briefly got upside. Fallen Angel was ultimately well on top and could prove even better at a mile, so she holds strong claims here.

There are some well-bred newcomers here, including MOUNTAIN BREEZE who is closely related to the 2019 champion juvenile Pinatubo. Mountain Breeze, a daughter of Lope de Vega, is one of three contenders in this contest for Charlie Appleby and is the choice of William Buick which could be significant.

Richard Hannon has won two of the last four editions of this race and has a strong contender this year in THE ACTOR who showed plenty of promise when runner-up over this course and distance last month. The Actor showed his inexperience, running green inside the final 100 yards, but he’s entitled to be more streetwise with that outing under his belt and can get off the mark at the second attempt.

CYNOSURE offered plenty to work with last season, finishing runner-up to a useful prospect on his final start as a juvenile, and he didn’t need to improve to make the most of a good opportunity on his reappearance at Lingfield last month. Cynosure still looked a little rough around the edges, hanging to his left, but he was well on top at the line and remains with untapped potential, especially as he steps up in trip here. An opening mark of 85 could prove lenient and he gets the vote on his handicap debut.
