Peres Jepchirchir Breaks World Record in London Marathon

Peres Jepchirchir has won the London Marathon 2024 after clocking 2:16:15. 

She broke the previous women’s only world record held by Mary Keitany by 46 seconds. 

Peres was racing against Tigist Assefa (Ethiopia), Megertu Alemu (Ethiopia) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (Kenya).

The Olympic champion dropped to the floor with emotion after winning the race. 

Tigst Assefa who had been lauded as a favourite before the race finished second with Joyciline Jepkosgei taking bronze.

Ethiopian Tigst Assefa clocked 2:16:23 while Joyciline Jepkosgei came third after clocking 2:16:24.

No athlete from the United Kingdom where the race is being held managed to be in the top 10.

Mhairi Maclennan was the first British woman to cross the finish line taking an overall 11th position.

The London Marathon 2024 and Olympic champion now heads for the Paris 2024 Olympics as a favourite to defend her title. 

Peres Jepchirchir won the London Marathon 2024 after finishing third in the 2023 edition where she clocked 2:18:38.

Her first major tournament win was in 2019 after she won Luso Meia Maratona, Lisboa, Half Marathon in Portugal.
