Southwark: About 2,000 people evacuated after suspected gas leak

About 2,000 people were evacuated from buildings in Southwark, south London, on Wednesday afternoon over a suspected gas leak.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it was called to Southwark Street, by the junction of Great Suffolk Street.

A cordon and road closure were put in place and “several buildings” were “evacuated as a precaution”, LFB said on X, formerly Twitter.

At about 17:08 BST, LFB said the gas board was on site “working to isolate the gas leak and make the scene safe”.

It added that a large number of those evacuated had left the area and a cordon remained in place as a precaution, while traffic was heavily disrupted.
