Five Household Cavalry horses have escaped with one covered in blood seen running through the streets of London.

At least one Household Cavalry soldier was thrown to the ground and injured during a training exercise near to Buckingham Palace.

A blue tent was erected and Buckingham Palace road was closed, at least four other soldiers were left injured in this rare incident.

A Mercedes people carrier driver said his windows were smashed by one of the Household Cavalry horses.

He told LBC Radio, “I didn’t see when the horse hit my car. I was like smashed senseless,” leaving blood on his vehicle.

Bashir Aden, 48, a construction worker, told The Telegraph: “I saw a soldier falling down into the street after the horse ran into a car. One of my colleagues called the police.

“The man hit the floor hard, he was screaming in pain. You could see blood all over the parked car.”

The PA news agency was told by  Tracey, “It was the street from Tower Bridge towards Limehouse Tunnel… just running past cars and an unmarked Range Rover following them.”

An Army Spokesperson said, “A number of military working horses become loose during routine exercise this morning.

“All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp. A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

A coffee shop worker on the Strand told the Telegraph, “I saw a white horse running, he was bleeding all over his chest.

“A few moments later I saw another horse – a black one – running after him. And then a police car went down the road after them.”

The City of London Police said: “At around 8.40am, we were called about horses that had became loose and were travelling through the city. Our officers have contained two horses on the Highway near Limehouse. We’re waiting for an Army horse box to collect the horses and transport them to veterinary care.”

An Army Spokesperson said earlier on Wednesday morning, “A number of military working horses become loose during routine exercise this morning.
