The relaunch of a 20m swimming pool and sports hall at Golden Lane Sport and Fitness in the City of London has marked the completion of an extensive £2.65m refurbishment.

Cartwright Pickard Architects were behind the redesign of the Grade II-listed facility, which first opened in the 1960s and was originally designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bon – the architects behind the Barbican complex.

The 20m, four-lane swimming pool and the 11m x 25m (36ft x 82ft) sports hall join a gym equipped by Life Fitness and exercise studios, which were unveiled at the venue last month.

Jonathan Acott, general manager at Fusion Lifestyle said: “Not only are we able to offer city workers and locals a swimming experience second to none, but we now have a wide range of fitness.”

Reverend Dr Martin Dudley, chair of the City of London Corporation’s community and children’s services committee, added: “The opening of the new centre in London’s Olympic year will play a role in creating a lasting legacy for people in the Square Mile and beyond.”
